We have very limited patient records prior to 1979. Most of the early records were destroyed. There are some archive books listing very limited patient information. To contact Richmond State Hospital for genealology records contact Kerry Moore the director of our medical records department.
Indiana State Archives (http://www.in.gov/icpr/archives/featured/csh_aiin/csh_hosp.html) apparently has some materials. According to their website:
"Richmond State Hospital (1890-present) (formerly Eastern Hospital for the Insane) Richmond State Hospital has served people with mental illness from 18 counties in eastern Indiana for 105 years. Collection Description: Annual Reports; List of Patients, 1887-1923; Medical Records (sampling), NEED DATES. "
Contact the State Archives for arrangements to search their collection.
Morrison Reeves Library (http://www.mrl.lib.in.us/geneal.html) has a significant collection of genealogical and historical materials. The catalog of some of their matierials is online but " these sources are located in Reference Services and may only be used in the library. Local history or genealogy questions will not be accepted or answered by e-mail at this time." Morrison Reeves library does have a list of genealogy links, some local at: http://www.mrl.lib.in.us/webso.html#anchor194901 The local web portal, Waynet (for Wayne County) lists local genalogical resources at: http://www.waynet.org/people/genealogy/default.htm
Allen County Library (http://www.acpl.lib.in.us/genealogy/) ( Ft.Wayne, Indiana) is one of the premier genalogical facilities in the country and might be of some help. They probably have something online.
Also check http://www.cyndislist.com/ (cyndi's list - one of the internet's most comprehensive genealogical sites).
