Nursing at Richmond State Hospital

Sue Kinsey is the Nursing Director for Richmond State Hospital.

The nursing staff at Richmond State Hospital includes Registered Nurses, who range from Associate degree to Doctoral level of education, and Licensed Practical Nurses, who have completed 18 months of nurse's training. Licensure for all nurses require passing State Board exams for Nursing following graduation.

Qualified Medication Assistants (QMAs), have completed the Psychiatric Attendant Class in addition to the Medication Administration Class approved by the Indiana State Board of Health. They must also pass the State Exam for QMAs. The Psychiatric Attendants have completed in house training and assist with the daily care and active treatment for our patients. A new addition to the nursing staff includes the Unit Clerks. They must possess a QMA certificate with additional Unit Clerk Training which is offered in house.

Nurses at RSH perform numerous services which include clinical and administrative supervision, patient and staff education and training, emergency care, providing assessment and active treatment for our patients. This is done in collaboration with the other clinical disciplines.

The Attendants provide psychiatric nursing care and active treatment for the patients. The QMAs also provide this care in addition to medication administration and transcription of physician's orders as necessary. The Unit Clerks maintain the functioning of the units through services which include communication with all disciplines and departments, transcribing orders, managing patient records, and scheduling appointments.

There are numerous classifications and levels within the Nursing Discipline which offers a variety of options in providing patient care. However, all nursing staff share the hospital's mission in providing individualized, quality behavioral healthcare with respect, dignity and caring.
