Services and Treatment: Youth Services Program

Population Served: Student

Serving adolescents with socially maladaptive behavior, history of failed placements, need of medium term inpatient treatment. Admissions criteria are:
  • Male
  • Age 12-16
  • Full scale IQ of 70+ 
  • Diagnosis of Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Explosive Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder or a Psychotic Disorder
  • Documented need of special education placement (from current individual educational plan).
  • Richmond State Hospital is the least restrictive environment for treatment of the individual in need of services.

  • Staff / Treatment Planning:

    A psychiatrist, two activity therapists, two social workers, a behavioral clinician, three teachers, four nurses, and 21 psychiatric attendants are available for implementing therapeutic services. Consultants include a child psychiatrist, a child psychologist and a dietition. Individual treatment plans are written and reviewed by the treatment team. The team also includes the adolescent, his parents, teachers, and caseworker.

    Education: student
    School services are provided by Richmond Community Schools in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (I.D.E.A.). The on-grounds school provides six and 1/2 hours of instruction daily in areas determined by the individual educational plan and case conference committee. Psychological services, speech therapy and learning disability consultations are also offered. The community schools are available for those students who have been successful in the on-grounds school and who are ready for a less restrictive placement. The community schools can offer special classes, regular classes, or a combination. Students earn graduation credits in any of the above programs. The objective of the program is for each student to learn social and academic skills needed for a successful transition back into their home school.

    Length of Stay / Placement:
    Average length of stay is six months. Actual stay is dependent upon achievement of individual treatment plan goals. There is no required minimum stay. Placements are made to the family, group home, or alternative family programs. Follow-up services are provided by community mental health centers.

    Referral Process:
    All application packets must contain the following information:

    A psychiatric evaluation, or review, within the last four months, including:
  • diagnosis (es)
  • treatment recommendations
  • medication summary
    Psychological testing completed within three years of application to include:
  • IQ score
  • any projective testing
  • treatment recommendations
    School records, including:
  • Individual Education Plan (IEP)
  • achievement testing
  • immunizations
  • credits earned
  • grades
    Community Mental Health Center recommendations and tentative discharge plan.
  • Collaboration among Richmond State Hospital, Richmond Community Schools and Dunn Center

    Richmond State Hospital staff work closely with Richmond Community Schools and Dunn Center, the local community mental health center. Dunn Center, in conjunction with Richmond Community Schools provides a day treatment program for emotionally and behaviorally disturbed youth from the community. Richmond Community Schools provides educational services to residents of the hospital program as well as the day program.

    This joint effort allows RCYS's programs to meet a wide range of needs.

    Clients are referred to RCYS from:

    • Community Mental Health Centers
    • Community School Systems - Special Education Departments
    • Probation Departments
    • Indiana Department of Family and Children
